Lets start this review with a couple of simple questions for thought?
  1. Have you ever got what is referred to as "Arm Pump" and become so fatigued while racing or riding hard that you couldn't even pull the clutch in to make a shift?.
  2. Have you ever missed a shift due to your clutch cable stretching and consistently needing to be re-adjusted?
  3. Can you detect a drag in your clutch cable pull due to dirt, sand or rust in the cable line?,
  4. How many times has your clutch cable frayed and eventually broke when you least expected it?.
  5. And lastly, are you running a built clutch system in your bike but are only using half of the heavy duty springs to make your clutch lever pull easier?.

The Magura Hydraulic Clutch System has made clutch cable issues obsolete. These systems eliminate cables which fray as well as collect dirt, sand and/or rust. They are self adjusting and maintain a consistent pull while eliminating the need to manually adjust before each ride. The smooth and consistent pull offers a better control of power and most importantly, reduces arm pump. These systems are maintenance free and allow for greater control of the clutch engagement point. With that said, its as simple as, install, adjust and ride :).

A little about Magura:
Magura is located in Bad Urach, Germany. Their engineers have been evolving, perfecting and redefining bicycle, motorcycle & ATV, technology since 1893. Did you know that Magura invented the worlds first hydraulic bicycle brake, or that Magura's controls have been piloting BMW motorcycles since 1927?. They also invented the first "adjust-on-the-fly" clutch lever for off-road racing legend Malcom Smith in 1968. Every Magura product comes fully equipped with over a century of German engineering. They are committed to customer satisfaction and building long lasting relationships with their customers. Please visit them and the new "Jack" hydraulic clutch system at www.magura.com.

Sand Wizard Notes:
We have two members in our group that now run these hydraulic clutch systems on quads. One of them is a 2001 Yamaha Raptor that is built for desert terrain, and the other is a 1991 Yamaha Banshee that is strictly a dune bike. Both of these bikes have built clutches installed in them and are using all six heavy duty springs at the clutch plate. To be quite honest, the installation instructions that are provided with these systems were a little weak. However, installing one of these is really very simple. Before we started, I had sent a e-mail note to Magura asking if they could provide me a better illustration on how the cylinder mounted at the case. A couple days later, I was quite shocked to receive a call at my house from a Magura technician in which he walked me through the steps over the phone. (That's what I call superior customer service). He also mentioned that they were currently working to develop better instructions to be included with the ATV kits. This person, (don't remember his name) was very informative about the product, gave me a couple installation & adjustment tips, and assured me that the installation was a snap.

This Hydraulic cylinder,

Attaches to the same location on your case as your stock line did. The only thing you must do is remove (or disconnect) the torsion return spring on your push level assembly at the case before you mount the cylinder and hook up the line. To make sure that my clutch was engaging & disengaging correctly, I pulled the clutch side case and made adjustments at the plate as well. After a few small adjustments & tweaks to the mounting bracket, I was good to go. Total installation time which includes removal and reinstallation of the clutch side case for adjustments, is estimated at 45 minutes. After riding with one of these on my bike for a full season I can honestly say that I did not need to make any adjustments to it at all. The clutch lever pull (even with all heavy duty springs) was much easier and consistent to pull. To give you a example, the pull/resistance feels almost the same as my stock Yamaha hydraulic front brakes. Its really that much of a improvement. I am pleased to say that we no longer experience that "Arm Pull" and get much less fatigued on the longer fast paced rides.

The only concern that we noted with these systems was the plastic fluid lines. Be sure that you route this line away from your header pipe(s) and zip-tie it so that it doesn't work its way loose. I zip-tied mine to the radiator hose in a couple of spots and have had no trouble with the stock plastic line. We did have to replace the plastic hydraulic line on our desert bike with a steal braided line due to heat related issues. Magura now has dealers all over the county that sale these systems as well as replacement parts, lines. Etc. Be sure to visit our local sponsor Cascade Innovations for pricing as they are a authorized Magura dealer. Phone 503-663-2887.

Conclusion:
With products like this where the rider benefits in so many situations, why wouldn't you own one?. They are reasonably priced, easy to install, and to put it quite frankly, will make you a better rider. Our recommendation would be to hold off on other cosmetic type mods to your bike until you have purchased and installed one of these systems. We couldn't be any happier with the results from ours and they have proven to be a great addition to our rides. In our opinion, Magura builds a superior product. They care about their customers and provide awesome product support.
